Spay Saves Brandi

We met Brandi after a tearful conversation with her family. They had been to more than one vet and emergency hospital trying to save her life, but were turned away for not having enough money.

Brandi is eleven years old, and was never spayed. As a result, Brandi started to show signs of a potentially fatal condition called pyometra ( an infected uterus). Her family has never bred her. She was far from neglected, was very loved, and they were devastated. Lack of resources and education on the importance of spay and neuter often leads to this very situation. We see it all the time, and it’s very sad for all involved.

Brandi’s family made the tough but unselfish decision to release their beloved little friend into our care so she could get the medical attention she so desperately needed. Along with Brandi, we were handed an envelope which contained every dollar that her family had on hand. They insisted that we take it. ..and even though it didn’t cover a fraction of her expenses, it touched our hearts. ..and we promised them that they would be together again. ❤️

These good people wished they could do more, but simply couldn’t. They have saved other neighborhood dogs from neglectful homes. So we could not turn our backs on these people and their sweet senior dog with the sad eyes who seemed to beg for help.

We immediately took Brandi to the emergency hospital where we spent much of the night waiting to see if surgery was even an option for a senior dog with a very serious heart condition.

After a series of tests and a consult with the doctor, we had Brandi scheduled for immediate surgery. We did not make this decision easily, as the surgery itself was a threat to her life due to her heart condition. But it was the only chance Brandi had to live.

Thanks to some talented veterinarians and compassionate technicians, Brandi’s life was saved. Not only was her infected uterus removed, but her painful teeth were as well . When we called Brandi’s family, they broke down in tears. They were so incredibly grateful. But the best was yet to come.

After a week recovering in one of our very special and experienced foster homes, Brandi was reunited with her family. There were tears and smiles, hugs and kisses all around.
